A child's total wellbeing is greatly influenced by mental health, which is equally as critical as physical health. Children's mental health has a long-lasting effect on their life and how they think, feel, and behave.
"A state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community" is how the World Health Organisation defines mental health.
Unfortunately, a lot of children and young people experience poor mental health, and the pandemic has made it much more difficult. This is why it’s important as care givers to be proactive and take measures to enhance the mental health and welfare of the children in our care.
Here are a few ways you can encourage better wellbeing practices:
1. Encourage a Supportive Environment: For kids to feel safe and secure, they need a supportive environment. Encourage open dialogue and give them a platform to share their emotions and ideas. Be kind and empathetic, and pay attention to what they have to say at all times.
2. Encourage Positive Thinking: Help kids cultivate a growth mindset by encouraging them to concentrate on the positive aspects of their lives. Encourage them to follow their hobbies and passions while teaching them to be resilient.
3. Promote Physical Activity: Exercise is crucial for maintaining good mental health. Encourage kids to be active, whether it is by playing outside or participating in sports or dance. Endorphins are released when you exercise, and they can improve mood and lessen stress.
4. Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is essential for maintaining good mental health. By developing a pattern and a sleep friendly atmosphere, you can help kids get enough rest.
5. Encourage Healthy Eating: A balanced diet is crucial for maintaining mental health. Encourage kids to have a balanced diet and to consume fewer sugary and processed foods.
6. Practice mindfulness: Breathing exercises and guided imagery exercises are two mindfulness techniques that can assist kids in calming down and de-stressing. Encourage kids to frequently practise mindfulness, and model it for them.
